The major drop in international diesel prices, driven by expectations for US-Iran negotiations in energy markets, will have a limited impact on pump prices in Turkiye. Because 5 lira 32 kurus of the expected 6 lira 37 kurus reduction will be transferred to Special Consumption Tax (SCT), the net reduction that will reflect in vehicle owners' pockets will be 1 lira 5 kurus.
The expectation that the US and Iran could return to the negotiation table and the easing of concerns over oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz rapidly drove prices down in international markets. This decline in product prices in the Mediterranean market has also created a significant discount margin in fuel pricing in Turkey.
SCT REGULATION ERODED THE DISCOUNT
Following these positive developments in global markets, one of the highest discounts in diesel in recent months was anticipated. However, when the SCT came into play, the expected huge discount melted away at the pump.
A 1 LIRA DISCOUNT TO BE REFLECTED AT THE PUMP
According to calculations, a large portion of the discount calculated at 6 lira 37 kuruş will be transferred to the SCT. While 5 lira 32 kuruş will be transferred to the SCT, the net discount reflected at the pump will be 1.5 TL.
