Today, Özgür Özel and 91 MPs, who will announce their resignation from CHP, officially establish a new party by submitting the founding petition to the Ministry of Interior. With this step taken on the anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne, CHP's seat count in the parliament drops to 44, losing its main opposition status, while the new party, reaching 91 MPs, becomes the new main opposition force in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
The wind of separation that started in CHP is completely changing the balances in Turkish politics. Today, on the anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne, the new formation led by Özgür Özel, which is preparing to submit its founding petition to the Ministry of Interior, is ready to become the new main opposition party in Parliament with the participation of 91 deputies.
NUMBER OF DEPUTIES JOINING THE NEW PARTY: 91
Yesterday was a busy time in the CHP Group. Following a closed-door meeting chaired by Deputy Group Chair Murat Emir, the deputies who will be part of the new party's founding board completed the document signing process. Among them were senior figures who, after receiving the message, submitted their resignations from CHP via e-Devlet in the evening. Wet-signed resignation letters were also collected to be submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly Presidency. According to information leaked to the press, the number of deputies leaving CHP to join the new party has reached 91.
APPLICATION TO THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF LAUSANNE
While Özgür Özel is expected to announce his resignation from CHP with a video message in the morning, the founding petition of the new party will be delivered to the Ministry of Interior before noon. It is noteworthy that in Özel's daily schedule, the phrase "24 July 2026 Ankara Program of Özgür Özel" is used instead of the title "CHP Leader," and it is emphasized in the press that "the CHP chapter is completely closed." Özel, who will perform Friday prayers at Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque, will meet with deputies at the Anatolian Club at 14:00 to hold elections for the Chairman, Party Assembly, Central Executive Board, and Parliament management.
CHP LOSES ITS MAIN OPPOSITION STATUS
CHP, which has 135 seats in Parliament, will drop to 44 seats after the departure of 91 deputies. With this scenario:
- CHP will lose its "Main Opposition Party" status in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
- The new party led by Özgür Özel will become the new main opposition force in Parliament in terms of the number of deputies.
- The seating arrangement in the Turkish Grand National Assembly General Assembly Hall will be completely reorganized, and the number of groups in Parliament will increase to 7.
WHAT WILL BE THE PARTY'S NAME? THE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING IS READY
While the new party's name is initially expected to be "Yeni Party," it is learned that two alternative options including the words "change" and "freedom" are also kept on the table. The party's headquarters building has been secured in Mustafa Kemal Neighborhood, considered the heart of politics in Ankara. The renovation work on the building is targeted to be completed within 2-3 weeks.
FIRST CONGRESS IN AUTUMN: FIELD WORK BEGINS
According to the new party's roadmap, a major congress will convene in September or October to determine the party's main face. Immediately after the petition is submitted, Özgür Özel will begin trips across the country and personally inaugurate the rapidly completed provincial organizations.
