Increased sugar consumption during Ramadan Feast poses a threat to children's dental health. Experts state that sugar is fermented by bacteria in the mouth into acid, which can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities. They emphasize that sugar consumption should be limited during the holiday to protect dental health, and in addition to increasing the frequency of tooth brushing, consuming a slice of cheese in environments where brushing is not possible can help regulate mouth pH balance and prevent cavity formation.

In statements regarding the issue, Dentist Hüseyin Ceylan pointed out that children's dental health must be protected, stating, "Cavities in milk teeth are not just a temporary problem. Permanent teeth, which begin to emerge at the age of six, can also decay rapidly. Children can lose their teeth, which they will use for a lifetime, at an early age."

"CHEESE RAISES THE PH LEVEL OF THE ORAL ENVIRONMENT"

Stating that teeth need to be brushed more than usual after consuming sweets during the holiday, Ceylannazik said, "The blessed Ramadan Feast, also known as the Sugar Feast. Especially during this period, children consume more sweets as they visit guests. Sugar can be fermented and turned into acid by bacteria in the mouth. This acid can remain on the tooth enamel and cause rapid decay of the teeth. To prevent this, sugar consumption should be limited, and the number of tooth brushings should be increased slightly compared to other times. Additionally, if brushing is not possible after consuming sugary foods, eating a slice of cheese can significantly prevent tooth decay. Cheese raises the pH level of the oral environment and creates a gentle environment. This neutralizes the acid that causes tooth enamel erosion created by bacteria. It also contains calcium and phosphate, which are effective in preventing cavities, and casein, a protein unique to cheese, is extremely effective in preventing tooth decay. Adults do not consume as much sugar as children, so the main ones we need to protect are children. Cavities in milk teeth can affect not only the milk teeth but also the permanent teeth that begin to emerge at the age of six. In this case, a child may lose a tooth that they might use for a lifetime at the age of 6 or 7 within a few years," he said.
