Canadian actress Claire Brosseau announced that she wishes to end her life under Canada's medical assistance in dying program, citing long-standing mental health issues as her reason, and has filed a lawsuit against the government for this right.
Canadian actress Claire Brosseau stated in an interview with the New York Times that she wanted to end her life through medically assisted suicide due to long-standing struggles with mental health issues.
"I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING SINCE CHILDHOOD"
The 48-year-old actress noted that she has been battling manic depression, anxiety disorder, substance addiction, chronic suicidal thoughts, and other mental health issues since childhood. Brosseau expressed that she has filed a lawsuit for the right to die through Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying program.
SHE HAD DESCRIBED SUICIDE ATTEMPTS IN HER OPEN LETTER
Brosseau, born in Montreal and featured in dozens of films, mentioned in an open letter published on her Substack account last year that she had attempted suicide multiple times and received treatment from various psychiatrists and counselors across the United States.
SHE FILED A LAWSUIT TO DIE
Brosseau stated that many of the treatment methods she tried worsened her condition, and she applied for assisted suicide in Canada, but due to legal regulations, those with impaired mental health are not allowed to benefit from this right. She noted that she filed a lawsuit against the Canadian government for this reason.
While the lawsuit process is ongoing, experts indicated that Brosseau could benefit from this right in 2027.
