At the October 29 Republic Day celebrations held in Eskişehir, martyr’s father Alişan Şahin harshly criticized the protocol’s seating arrangement. The father of Martyr Gendarmerie Specialist Corporal Şükrü Şahin, reacting to the place allocated to them, said, "Why are you pushing us all the way into a corner like this? There can be no such baseness, such a wrong. A person’s patience has a limit."
In Eskişehir, tension arose at the 29 October Republic Day ceremony held on Atatürk Boulevard on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the Republic.
Alişan Şahin, the father of Martyr Gendarmerie Specialist Corporal Şükrü Şahin, reacted to the seating arrangement reserved for the families of martyrs. Thinking that they were not given an appropriate place in the protocol, Şahin loudly voiced his resentment in the ceremony area.
"WHY ARE YOU PUSHING US INTO A CORNER LIKE THIS?"
Reacting to the protocol arrangement, the martyred father said:
"I am Yiğit's father. This is no way to run protocol—shame on you. What kind of protocol is this? Why are you pushing us all the way into a corner like this? I am the father of an honorable Şükrü Şahin. Such baseness, such a wrong cannot happen. A person's patience has a limit."
"WEREN'T WE THE CROWN OF YOUR HEAD?"
Emphasizing that the respect shown to the families of martyrs should not remain merely in words, Şahin continued his reaction as follows:
"Weren't we remembered? Weren't we the crown of your head? Weren't our hearts burning for one another? Is this how they burn? Is this how it will be? You make us regret coming. You are trampling our honor and pride underfoot. Does that suit you?"
"I GAVE A SON FOR THIS HOMELAND"
Alişan Şahin, expressing his sorrow, wanted everyone to hear his words.
Şahin said, "Let everyone hear, commander. If I don't shout here, if our voice is not heard elsewhere, this homeland cannot be protected. Shame on you. Where have I come? Just look. Is this something that should happen? Is this honor, is this pride?"
The martyred father concluded his words with the following statements:
"I gave a son for this homeland; I said my hearth has gone out. But still I said let my homeland and my nation endure, let my flag wave. Shame on you."
