According to a statement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor was recorded at a depth of 8 kilometers, 27 kilometers from the city of Jalalabad, near the Pakistan border, at 23:47 local time. The country's official news agency Bakhtar reported that at least 250 people were killed and 500 were injured due to the earthquake.
"THE DEATH TOLL MAY RISE"
Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, stated that the earthquake occurred in a mountainous and hard-to-reach area, and that large-scale search and rescue operations have been initiated. Zaman noted that the death toll could increase, saying, "It will take time to obtain accurate information regarding human casualties and infrastructure damage."
