Renowned actor Genco Erkal, who passed away today, will be laid to rest at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery after a commemoration ceremony to be held at Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage on Friday, August 2nd.

Genco Erkal, who has appeared in numerous films and theater plays and has been undergoing treatment for leukemia for a while, passed away early this morning. Erkal's funeral ceremony, which has plunged the art world into mourning, has been announced.

In a statement made on Genco Erkal's Instagram account, it was stated that "We bid farewell to the founder of Dostlar Tiyatrosu, the honor of Turkish theater, beloved Genco Erkal, with a commemoration ceremony to be held at Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage on Friday, August 2nd at 14:00. After the afternoon prayer at Teşvikiye Mosque, the funeral will be buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery."

WHO IS GENCO ERKAL?

Genco Erkal was born on March 28, 1938 in Istanbul. Genco Erkal, who has worked as an actor and director in important private theater groups in Turkey since 1959, founded Dostlar Tiyatrosu, which he is still the artistic director of today and played a pioneering role in the development of political theater in Turkey, in 1969.

In 1965, he adapted Russian writer Nikolay Gogol's story "Diary of a Madman" and staged it as the first one-man play based on a text in a Western sense in Turkey. This work, which he staged with three different interpretations over the years, became synonymous with him. Erkal was known as a master of one-man plays.

Genco Erkal adapted the works of many artists, from Aziz Nesin to Haldun Taner, from Nâzım Hikmet to Behiç Ak and Yaşar Kemal, for the theater. He voiced many works as a narrator in symphonic concerts. In cinema, he won two Golden Orange Awards for "Best Actor" at the Antalya Film Festival in 1982 with the films "Horse" and in 1983 with the film "Attack on Interest".
