IT MEANS "DETERMINATION" OR "UNSHAKABLE RESOLVE"

The term "Sumud," which means "determination" or "unshakable resolve" in Arabic, has become a concept among the Palestinian people to describe oppression and resistance after the Six-Day War in 1967. The concept of Sumud expresses the search for ways to resist occupation by remaining on Palestinian land, keeping Palestinian identity and culture alive, and through non-violent civil disobedience, as well as building alternative institutions. In Palestine, the olive tree and a pregnant peasant woman are used to depict this concept.
