During the demolition, a heavily damaged 5-story apartment building in the Samandağ district of Hatay collapsed onto a two-story prefabricated workplace next to it.
APARTMENT COLLAPSED ONTO PREFABRICATED WORKPLACE
The incident occurred around 18:30 in the Atatürk Neighborhood on Hospital Street in the district. The demolition of the 5-story apartment, which suffered heavy damage in the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, was decided by court order. The building, which was set for demolition, collapsed onto the two-story prefabricated workplace that was used as a döner shop next to it.
LUCKILY, THE WORKPLACE WAS CLOSED
Thanks to the workplace being closed after the demolition work began, there were no fatalities or injuries in the incident. Zekat Gümüş, the operator of the döner shop, explained that he had kept the workplace closed for 2 days due to the demolition. "I had been coming and going here for 2 days like I was working with friends. Unfortunately, after 2 days, the demolition company caused the building to collapse by blasting the columns at the same level as the building instead of the third columns. The building was a two-story prefabricated structure, and if it hadn't been a döner shop, everything inside would have been destroyed," he said. An investigation has been launched regarding the incident.
