KILLS TREES

It has been reported that the harmful insect, which is seen occasionally in many countries including Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Croatia, as well as in Turkey, is not affected by any chemical pesticides; it can kill many different hardwood species, including citrus, walnut, apple, Australian pine, hibiscus, plane tree, willow, pear, mulberry, Chinese gooseberry, poplar, lychee, kumquat, Japanese red cedar, oak, and ficus.

23 TREES UPROOTED

It was determined that the maple and ash trees located on the sidewalks in some streets of Cihangir Neighborhood were infested by these beetles. The Avcılar District Agriculture Directorate, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and Avcılar Municipality conducted a joint field study, and after marking the 23 trees that the beetle had partially or completely dried out, they were uprooted with heavy machinery. The areas where the trees were planted were covered with concrete, considering the possibility of the pest's reproduction or spread.

PESTICIDES ARE NOT EFFECTIVE

It has been learned that the trees identified as dried out by the beetle were uprooted and destroyed, and could not be used in any area. It was noted that the methods to be followed against this pest, which is on the ministry's "red list," were published in the Official Gazette and came into effect in 2014.
