A ceremony was held at the Adana No. 1 Type T Closed Prison for the correctional officer Berk Öztürk (26), who lost his life when the car he was in collided with a construction truck after work, and for the officer Beyaz Fidan Şahin (38), who was 5 months pregnant and also served at the same prison. The accident occurred yesterday around 5:30 PM on the D400 highway in the Sarıçam district. The car with license plate 06 AAP 684, driven by prison guard Berk Öztürk, crashed into the back of the excavation truck with license plate 33 AVG 307, driven by B.Ö. Öztürk, along with fellow prison officer Beyaz Fidan Şahin and prison guard Furkan Büyük, were trapped in the wrecked car. The injured were taken to hospitals by ambulances. Öztürk and Şahin, who were receiving treatment, could not be saved. Büyük is reported to be in critical condition. The truck driver B.Ö. was taken to the police station. An investigation has been launched regarding the accident.
A FUNERAL CEREMONY WAS HELD
The funerals of Berk Öztürk and Beyaz Fidan Şahin, a mother of one child and five months pregnant, who was transferred to Adana after the Hatay earthquakes, were brought this morning to the Adana No. 1 Type T Closed Prison where they served. The ceremony held here was attended by the General Director of Prisons and Detention Houses Enis Yavuz Yıldırım, city protocol, judicial and prison institution heads, prosecutors, colleagues, and families.
"THEY WALKED TO THE RIGHT AS MARTYRS"
Speaking at the ceremony, General Director of Prisons and Detention Houses Yıldırım said, "We have gathered here to bid farewell to our two colleagues, our brothers, whom we lost due to a tragic accident while they were returning home after completing their duties in the evening. I am sure that the audience here will testify that they have fulfilled a difficult, patient, and self-sacrificing duty, which is the trust of our nation, in the best way possible. I truly believe that these two brothers, who left us at such a young age due to such an accident, walked to the right as martyrs after completing their duties."
THE MOTHER'S CRY BROKE HEARTS
After the speech, prayers were recited for the prison staff. Then, Berk Öztürk's mother, holding onto the coffin, cried out, "Berk, I can't do without you. Please get up. Open the coffin." Relatives tried to comfort the fainting mother. Berk Öztürk was buried in Kabasakal Cemetery; Beyaz Fidan Şahin was buried in Burak Cemetery.
