The Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan province, China, collapsed after its completion this year. The bridge had been closed to traffic due to cracks that appeared in the surrounding slopes and roads. The collapse, which occurred without any casualties or injuries, covered the mountain view with large clouds of dust. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. Although China has made significant progress in infrastructure projects, bridge collapses continue to be a frequent issue.

Moments of a newly built bridge in Southwest China collapsing into a river were captured on camera. Concrete blocks toppled and fell into the river.

The Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan province is approximately 760 meters long and was completed this year. However, on Monday, police closed the bridge to traffic due to cracks that had formed on the slopes and roads surrounding the bridge. The ground on the mountainside had deteriorated, and small landslides had jeopardized the bridge's stability.

Although the bridge collapsed, there were no fatalities or injuries in the incident. Videos showing the moment of the collapse captured the serene mountain landscape and the shining river, which became engulfed in large clouds of dust as the bridge fell. Concrete slabs fell on top of each other, tumbling down the mountainside into the river. Only half of the bridge remained standing.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse. In recent years, bridge collapses have become a frequent issue in China. For example, in 2024, a highway bridge in Shaanxi province partially collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 11 people.

Although China has made significant progress in infrastructure projects, such incidents continue to occur. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which opened this year, is noted as the highest bridge in the world. Located approximately 625 meters above the river, this bridge will reduce travel time between the two sides of the valley from an hour to just a few minutes.

The project began in 2022 and cost approximately $283 million. Once completed, the bridge is expected to boost tourism and contribute to the local economy. The region hosts nearly half of the world's highest bridges due to its mountainous terrain.
