A five-story building collapsed on Issıkgöl Street in the morning hours. While many search and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, it is estimated that there are 5 people under the rubble according to initial assessments.

In a statement from the Kocaeli Governor's Office, it was said, "A collapse has occurred in a building in our Gebze district. Our teams have been directed to the scene, and search and rescue operations have begun. We extend our best wishes to our citizens."
"CURRENTLY, 5 PEOPLE UNDER THE RUBBLE POSSIBLE"
Gebze Mayor Zinnur Büyükgöz, who connected to a news channel by phone, reported that the collapsed building was five stories tall and that there was a pharmacy on the ground floor. Büyükgöz noted the following regarding the residency status in the building: "There were a total of 7 people consisting of two families, but the information we received indicated that the property owner was in the countryside. Currently, there are 5 people who may be under the rubble. 2 of the residents are missing. The other floors were empty. One floor was already a pharmacy, and it was closed because it was early in the morning."
"THERE IS A METRO CONSTRUCTION IN THE AREA"
Büyükgöz expressed that he suspects the building may have been constructed after the 1999 earthquake, stating, "There is a metro construction in the area. We are investigating whether it is related to that. We are prioritizing the issue of lives first."
