On January 1st, police teams were dispatched after receiving a report from a house in West Valley City. The 911 operator reported that they could not hear the caller's voice but heard a scuffle.
In footage captured by police cameras, officers rushed to the basement as soon as they entered the house. Upon entering, they found 35-year-old Erik Bertelsen stabbing his 63-year-old mother Terrie and 67-year-old father Kerry Bertselsen, with his arms covered in blood.
Despite the officers shouting, "Show your hands! Drop the weapon!" Bertelsen continued to stab. In response, one of the officers fired two shots, and Bertelsen collapsed to the ground.
While the entire house was being checked, the officers repeatedly warned Bertelsen to drop the knife. One officer said, "If you don't drop the knife, I will shoot again. I don't want to shoot again, buddy," and warned his colleagues not to approach.
West Valley City Police Chief Colleen Jacobs stated, "This is a tragedy. It is a very tragic event for both the families and the officers who responded to the incident."
The deceased couple's stepdaughter, Chasity Ulibarri, said, "I had a feeling something like this would happen. Four days ago, I called the police and asked them to check on the situation because I knew he had taken their phones."
The police officer who intervened in the incident has been temporarily relieved of duty as per standard procedure. The investigation is ongoing.
