According to a written statement from the U.S. Mint, it has been announced that the lowest denomination currency will no longer be printed.

NO LONGER NECESSARY

The statement indicated that the production of the 1-cent coin (penny) has been halted because it is no longer deemed necessary to meet the needs of the United States.

COST IS TOO HIGH

The Mint's statement noted that the decision was influenced by the fact that the production cost per cent has increased by 1.42 cents over the last 10 years, rising to 3.69 cents.

IN CIRCULATION FOR 230 YEARS

The 1-cent coin, one of the first coins minted after the establishment of the U.S. Mint in 1792, has been in circulation for over 230 years.
