Russia launched a heavy attack on Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region today; while the bombardment caused destruction in civilian residential areas, search and rescue operations were initiated, and the humanitarian crisis in the region deepened once again.
The city of Kostiantynivka in Ukraine's Donetsk region was the scene of intense attacks by Russian forces today. Although the details of the attack are not yet fully clear, the city was subjected to heavy bombardment and artillery fire, targeting residential areas and infrastructure; civilian areas suffered significant damage.
MANY PARTS OF THE CITY WERE HIT
The Ukrainian side announced that the attack began in the afternoon and that many parts of the city were hit by prolonged bombardment. Local authorities stated that fires broke out in civilian areas and that there may be people trapped under the rubble. Following the attack, emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, and search and rescue operations began.
HUMANITARIAN CRISIS DEEPENS
Initial reports indicating that the attack also targeted civilian residential areas suggest that the humanitarian crisis in the region will deepen further. Kostiantynivka has long been a strategic city under pressure from Russian forces both on land and from the air; bombardments have increased again with today's attack.
The Ukrainian government and the regional administration stated that they are increasing official statements regarding the consequences of the attack while rescue and evacuation efforts continue. Additionally, damage assessment studies and reports on possible civilian casualties will be shared with the public throughout the day.
