In Aydın, where the scorching summer heat exceeded seasonal norms and pushed thermometers to 42 degrees Celsius, the streets and avenues emptied out as the perceived temperature reached 47 degrees, turning the city into a ghost town.
As temperatures rise across the country, temperatures in Aydın have also begun to exceed seasonal norms.
THERMOMETERS SHOW 42 DEGREES
In Aydın, where the average high temperature for June is 33.5 degrees and the average low is 18.3 degrees, thermometers showed 42 degrees. With the felt temperature reaching approximately 47 degrees across the city, citizens were almost searching for shade to take shelter. Many citizens trying to protect themselves from the sun attempted to cool off in parks and gardens.
LIKE A GHOST TOWN DURING THE DAY
Across Aydın, which turns into a ghost town especially during the daytime, the hot weather has brought life to a standstill. While citizens seeking shade flocked to parks and gardens, some tried to cool off in decorative pools. Experts warn against going outside unless necessary, especially during midday, and temperatures are expected to continue in the coming days.
"AYDIN FEELS COOL TO ME"
Elif Sinan, a citizen who came to Aydın from Adana, said: "The heat in Aydın is very nice for me. It's breezy now. I wouldn't want you to see the heat in Adana. It's extremely hot there. Last year we saw 59 degrees there. Even air conditioners didn't help. So Aydın feels cool to me." Citizen Yücel İlbaş said: "We're used to it. It's been like this for 30 years, but it's hot. We cool off with air conditioning. We're used to it now."
"MANİSA IS NOT THIS HOT"
Mehmet Can Kırmızı, a citizen who came to Aydın from the Gölmarmara district of Manisa, said: "I came to Aydın with my wife to sightsee, but it's extremely hot here. There's no such heat. Even if you go to the fields, there's no such heat back home. Aydın is a different place, but it has nice places to visit. Manisa is not this hot. Here, sweat is pouring from our foreheads. We were already burnt, and this place burned us even more. But as a province, it's a nice place."
"UNLIVABLE HERE IN SUMMER"
Ebru Öztürk, a university student in Aydın originally from Mardin, said: "Honestly, I can't adapt to the heat in Aydın. My hometown is also very hot, but I've never seen such heat. I'm complaining. The only solution is to go to the sea or turn on the air conditioners. The sun in Mardin burns badly, but since there's no humidity there, the heat there is definitely nicer. But the humidity rate in Aydın is so high that no one should come to Aydın in summer. It's unlivable here in summer."
Gamze Çakır, who came to Aydın from Alanya district of Antalya for university education, stated that Aydın's heat is scorching: "I live in Alanya. Compared to there, it's really hot and extremely dry. There, it gets hot, and we can't breathe, but here the heat directly burns your body. It makes you feel faint."
"I CAN'T COPE WITH THE HEAT"
Mehmet Cırban, a citizen who mentioned that there were hotter days in the past, said: "The heat in Aydın is not pleasant at all. Actually, this is a global issue. I can't cope with the heat. It's troublesome. In 1986, the temperature reached 48 degrees. It happens now too, but we've become soft. 38 degrees makes us uncomfortable."
Gülizar Güldal, another citizen who stated she doesn't remember such heat in her childhood, said: "I'm from Aydın, but it wasn't this hot in the past, during our childhood. But now it's extremely hot. May God help us all."
