The trustee summit between CHP and MHP has begun.

The trustee summit between CHP and MHP has begun.

11.12.2024 14:01

While the discussions about the appointed trustees in municipalities continue in Turkish politics, the officials of the CHP and MHP came together today to discuss the issue.

The statement by MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız that the Election Law and the Political Parties Law need to be addressed to prevent the appointment of trustees, and the positive evaluation of Yıldız's statements by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, led to a meeting between the delegations of CHP and MHP today at 1:30 PM.

BAŞARIR AND AKÇAY ARE ATTENDING

Contacts were established between the officials of the two parties. The group vice presidents and legal representatives of CHP and MHP met today at 1:30 PM in the Parliament. CHP will be represented by Group Vice President Ali Mahir Başarır and Deputy Chairman responsible for Legal Affairs Gül Çiftçi. MHP will be represented by Group Vice President Erkan Akçay and Sakarya Deputy Levent Bülbül.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The discussions that flared up with the appointment of a trustee after the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, and subsequent trustee appointments, led MHP Deputy Chairman and Istanbul Deputy Feti Yıldız to address the discussions on the appointment of trustees to municipalities during the budget discussions of the Ministry of Justice in the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission. He stated, "To prevent trustee appointments through arrests or recent practices, we must calmly discuss this issue by revisiting the Election Law and the Political Parties Law, without forgetting the presumption of innocence. Therefore, these laws are necessary."

Later, Feti Yıldız also stated on his X account, "To ensure that discussions regarding trustee appointments and the prosecution of deputies do not continue, it is essential to redefine the criteria for being a Mayor and a Deputy candidate. Whether a public case opened with strong suspicion of crime and concrete evidence in terrorism offenses prevents candidacy can be discussed calmly… (without forgetting the presumption of innocence) In any case; the time has come to create a new Election Law and Political Parties Law."

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also positively responded to MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız's statements, saying, "I want to express once again that I value MHP's approach and that we will follow it closely, and that we will contact them within this week. We also say to MHP that if this evaluation is sincere this time, and if you can find support for this approach you requested from the ruling party just once, which you have been indifferent to everything your coalition partner has done until now, you will have saved Turkey from a great shame and our democracy from a great stranglehold," he stated.
