The United States has indefinitely suspended Green Card applications following two attacks that drenched the country in blood. Homeland Security Secretary Noem announced that the program of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been halted at the direction of Trump.

U.S. President Donald Trump suspended the "Green Card" lottery (Diversity Visa) program on Thursday following the armed attack on the campuses of Brown University and MIT.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced via the X platform that Trump ordered the suspension of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) program. In her post, Noem stated, "This monster should never have been allowed to enter our country."

WHAT IS THE DIVERSITY VISA PROGRAM?

Diversity visa program is a system that provides approximately 50,000 permanent residency permits (Green Cards) each year through a lottery for individuals from underrepresented countries in the U.S. (many of which are located in Africa). About 20 million people applied for the 2025 lottery, and more than 131,000 individuals were selected when including the spouses of the winners.

Candidates who win the lottery must undergo a rigorous security screening before being accepted into the U.S. Only 38 slots were allocated for Portuguese citizens, from which the attack suspect originated, in the 2025 lottery.
