The Anji Ansheng, produced in China and known as "the world's largest car carrier" with a capacity of 9,500 vehicles, has set sail for its maiden voyage. According to Xinhua, the ship, produced for SAIC Anji Logistics, a logistics subsidiary of the state-owned automotive company SAIC Motor, departed yesterday from Shanghai, China, heading to Europe.

CAN CARRY 9,500 CARS

Measuring 228 meters in length and 37.8 meters in width, the ship holds the title of "the world's largest car carrier" with a capacity of 9,500 vehicles. In recent years, significant investments have been made in car-carrying ships, also known as "Ro-ro ships," in China, which has been the world's largest car exporter for the past two years. Last month, the BYD Shenzen ship, with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles, owned by the Chinese private automotive company BYD, set sail from China to Brazil for its maiden voyage. Besides large shipping companies like Cosco, automotive companies such as SAIC, BYD, and Chery are forming their own fleets of carrier ships.

CHINA IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST EXPORTER

In 2024, China exported 6.4 million cars, maintaining its position as "the world's largest car exporting country," a title it first achieved in 2023. During this period, SAIC, which delivered 5.5 million cars to international markets, became China's largest exporting company. SAIC Anji Logistics currently operates a fleet of 35 car carrier ships, including 15 ocean-type vessels. The company plans to increase the number of ocean ships to 22 by 2026.
