19-year-old Olga Moskalyova was on the phone with her mother Tatiana for over an hour while being torn apart and eaten by bears. The helpless mother could not help her daughter as she heard her cries, "Mom, the bear is eating me! Mom, it hurts so much. Mom, help!" Olga's stepfather Igor Tsyganenkov had already become a victim of the bears when Olga called her mother; the bears had broken his neck and shattered his skull. Witnessing Igor being attacked by the bears near a river in the village of Termalniy, Russia, Olga tried to escape but was caught by a mother bear, which grabbed her by the leg. While the bear played with Olga, she managed to call her mother several times. Initially thinking her daughter was joking, Tatiana was shocked when she realized the seriousness of the situation and felt completely helpless to save her daughter. In one of her last calls to her mother, the weakened Olga cried out, "Mom, the bears are back. They came back and brought their three cubs. They are... eating me." About an hour after her first call, in her final call, Olga said as if she felt her life slipping away: "Mom, it doesn't hurt anymore. I don't feel the pain. Forgive me for everything, I love you so much." Then the call was cut off, and Tatiana never heard from her daughter again. When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found the bear still eating the bodies of Olga and her stepfather. Emotionally paying tribute to her daughter, Tatiana said, "My daughter was so much fun. She was very cheerful, friendly, and warm-hearted. She had graduated from music school and had just gotten her driver's license a few days before the bear attack." This incident, which occurred in 2011, still evokes horror-filled reactions on the internet. One social media user wrote: "I am so sorry for the mother who experienced the horror of her daughter being eaten alive by a bear in her last few minutes. This incident reminded me once again that I should never camp in the wild or step into a wilderness area." Another person expressed sympathy but warned about the dangers of entering bear territory without protective gear: "This story disturbed me greatly, but I have to agree that these people should not have been in bear territory unprotected. My heart goes out to the families of the victims, but you cannot blame a hungry mother with three cubs that she has to feed, doing what she naturally has to do. Lessons need to be learned." A third commentator said: "How ruthless... Hearing that a loved one has died in a horrific way and being unable to prevent it. Still, at least being able to say goodbye is a small consolation."
