According to a report by China's state television CCTV, 580 mountain climbers camping in the Gama Valley of the Tibet Autonomous Region, along with more than 300 local guides and support teams accompanying them, have reached safe areas.
Due to the snowstorm affecting the east of Everest, more than 1,000 people who were trekking in the region were stranded because roads were blocked in the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.
Previously, it was reported that rescue teams had evacuated 350 people in the area, and efforts were ongoing to bring other stranded groups to safety.
Meanwhile, yesterday, 137 mountain climbers stranded in the Laohugou area of the Haybey Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, located at the southeastern tip of the plateau, were rescued. Here, a climber affected by the storm had died due to hypothermia and altitude sickness.
The Gama Valley, located at an average altitude of 5,300 meters on the eastern slopes of Everest, offers a view of the mountain's eastern face after a trek of approximately 40 kilometers, making it a popular route for mountain trekking.
NO STRANDED ON THE NEPAL SIDE
On the Nepal side, facing the western face of the mountain, climbing teams ascending to the summit of Everest had returned to the main camp at 5,300 meters from the advanced camps on the mountain due to timely weather forecast warnings.
The website "Explorer's Web," which provides current information on mountain climbing in the region, reported that the snowstorm had caused a large amount of snow to be transported to the Khumbu Valley on the Everest climbing route, but there were no stranded individuals on the mountain.
The Nepal National Mountain Guides Association (NNMGA) announced that a 46-year-old South Korean citizen named Tejung Park had died while trekking on Mera Peak, which is 6,476 meters high and located within Nepal's borders, after being caught in a storm, and that at least one more person was missing in the area.
As the snowstorm affected many regions of Nepal, flights were canceled in many places, including the capital Kathmandu.
Mount Everest, which has the world's highest peak at an altitude of 8,848 meters, is located between China's Tibet Autonomous Region and Nepal. The western side of the mountain is in Nepal, while the eastern side is within Chinese borders.
