After 18 hours of US-Iran talks in Switzerland, the parties agreed on establishing a joint mechanism to prevent conflicts in Lebanon. A 60-day roadmap was also set at the summit mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, "Lebanon will be the first real test," while it is assessed that the agreement could narrow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's (Bibi) room for maneuver against Hezbollah.

In a joint statement issued by Qatar and Pakistan following the US-Iran talks held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, it was announced that the parties agreed to establish a new "conflict prevention unit" to secure the end of military operations in Lebanon.

According to the statement, the mechanism will operate between the US, Iran, and Lebanon, with Qatar and Pakistan assuming a facilitating role in the process. The unit's primary task will be to ensure the parties' adherence to the agreement and prevent the resurgence of clashes in Lebanon.

18-HOUR SUMMIT PRODUCES ROADMAP

After talks lasting approximately 18 hours, the parties also agreed on a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days.

The negotiations addressed the security of commercial passages through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's frozen assets, oil exports, and the security situation in Lebanon. The parties also agreed to establish a direct communication line to prevent potential crises in the Strait of Hormuz.

ARAKCHI: THE FIRST REAL TEST IS LEBANON

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a statement following the talks, said that the contacts in Switzerland yielded significant results and noted that the first major test would occur in Lebanon.

Araghchi stated that the mediation efforts of Qatar and Pakistan had achieved important progress, claiming that progress had been made on certain sanctions exemptions for Iran's oil and petrochemical exports, the release of a portion of frozen assets, and economic development plans.

The Iranian Minister assessed, "The first real test will be the conflict prevention mechanism in Lebanon."

LEBANON IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES TO THE AGREEMENT

The ongoing tension between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is seen as one of the most significant obstacles to reaching a comprehensive compromise between the US and Iran.

Despite renewed ceasefire attempts in recent times, attacks continue in the region, and according to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, thousands have lost their lives since March. It is reported that the draft agreement discussed in the negotiations includes provisions to maintain the ceasefire in Lebanon on the condition that Hezbollah does not attack Israel.

NEW TEST ON THE WASHINGTON-TEL AVIV LINE

The Lebanon heading concerns not only the negotiations between Iran and the US but also closely involves Washington-Tel Aviv relations. While Iran brings the cessation of attacks on Hezbollah, one of its most important allies in the region, as one of its key demands to the table, the Israeli side is not favorable to limiting its military operational capability against Hezbollah.

Assessments that US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have recently been uneasy about the attacks in Lebanon and Israel's stance towards the agreement are also noteworthy.
