In Madrid, the capital of Spain, more than 1,000 sheep walked through the city streets as part of an event known as the "Transhumance Festival," one of the medieval traditions.

The "Transhumance Festival," which turns the center of Madrid into a rural area every autumn, attracted great attention this year as well, with the participation of Spaniards and tourists. The event, where the sound of car horns gave way to the bleating of lambs and cowbells, lasted about 4 hours.

The Transhumance Festival, held in reference to the sheep that were taken up to high pastures due to summer heat and brought back down to the villages in autumn, today aims to promote animal husbandry, preserve ecological balance, and honor shepherds. Since 1994, the festival has been recognized as part of Spain's cultural heritage and has become an official ceremony.

According to records, although the first Transhumance in Madrid began in 923, it was made traditional with the establishment of the Honorary Council of Shepherds in 1273.

In the medieval tradition, shepherds paid a passage fee to the local authorities of the time to pass their sheep through the city, while today this is done symbolically to mayors.
