The Second Circuit Court in New York City, USA, has made a decision regarding the Turkish doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained for supporting Palestine.
GOVERNMENT'S REQUEST REJECTED
The court ruled that Öztürk should be transferred to Vermont, where the bail hearing will take place, by rejecting the government's request to delay the transfer in her "objection to being prevented from attending the bail hearing."
WILL BE TRANSFERRED BY MAY 14
The Appeals Court stated that Öztürk will be transferred to Vermont, where the bail hearing will take place under the supervision of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by May 14 at the latest, and noted that the Vermont District Court has the right to change the hearing schedule according to this new decision.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Rümeysa Öztürk, a doctoral student at Tufts University in Massachusetts, was detained by agents of the Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Department of Homeland Security around 5:15 PM local time on March 25 near her home in Boston. Öztürk, who received a Fulbright scholarship and is in the final year of her doctoral education, was stopped while leaving her home to go to iftar with her friends and was surrounded by six masked civilian ICE agents. Despite her objections, Öztürk was handcuffed and placed in a vehicle about two minutes later.
In a statement made by the Department of Homeland Security, it was claimed that Öztürk, a supporter of Palestine, "engaged in activities supporting Hamas," and a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security stated that Öztürk had been transferred to the ICE Processing Center in Louisiana. The Boston District Court temporarily halted Öztürk's deportation.
In a lawsuit filed by Öztürk's lawyers, the court issued a transfer order for her to physically attend the bail hearing to be held in Vermont, but the US government sought to appeal this transfer order to stop it.
