U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders strongly reacted to President Donald Trump's military action against Iran. Sanders claimed that Trump, along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has initiated an "illegal and unconstitutional war."
"WAR POWERS IN CONGRESS"
Referring to the U.S. Constitution, Sanders emphasized that the authority to declare war belongs to Congress, not the president. He stated that the Senate must convene immediately and called for a vote on the pending War Powers Resolution, expressing that he would strongly support this bill.
"CLEAR VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW"
Sanders said that the attack on Iran is a violation of international law and will increase global instability. He stated, "If the U.S. and Israel can launch an attack on a sovereign nation, any other country can do the same. Being powerful does not mean being right."
"THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DO NOT WANT ENDLESS WAR"
Recalling the Vietnam and Iraq wars, Sanders argued that the American people were misled in the past and that a similar situation is occurring today. Sanders said, "The American people were lied to about Vietnam. The American people were lied to about Iraq. The American people are being lied to again today — and once again, it will be ordinary people who will pay the price."
The opposition senator expressed that the American people need humane wages, accessible healthcare, affordable housing, and quality education for their children, not a new war.
Sanders concluded his statement with, "We must not allow Trump to drag us into another senseless war. No to war with Iran."
