U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Greenland holds significant importance for international security and expressed that it is necessary for the U.S. to control this region.

US President Donald Trump answered questions from reporters during the swearing-in ceremony held at the White House regarding the appointment of his lawyer Alina Habba as the Attorney General of New Jersey.

"WE MUST OWN GREENLAND FOR INTERNATIONAL SECURITY"

When asked about plans to expand the US military presence in Greenland, Trump stated, "We need Greenland. More importantly, we must own Greenland for international security."

"WE DO NOT TRUST DENMARK OR ANYONE ELSE"

Trump expressed his discomfort with Chinese and Russian ships roaming all over Greenland, stating that they do not trust Denmark or anyone else to "deal with this situation." He pointed out that the waterways around Greenland have been made navigable by icebreakers, indicating that these waterways provide "direct access to China and Russia."

"IF THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND, WE WILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN"

Trump said, "Greenland is very important in the modern age. I think Denmark and the European Union (EU) understand this. If they do not understand, we will have to explain." He emphasized the US's stance on regional dominance.

TRUMP'S STATEMENTS REGARDING GREENLAND

Since taking office again, Trump has frequently expressed his desire to bring Greenland under the control of the United States. In a post on his social media account on December 23, 2024, the US President argued that Greenland should be under US control, describing the ownership and control of the island as "an absolute necessity." On March 13, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office, he made similar statements, saying, "(The annexation of Greenland by the US) I think this will happen. We need to make an agreement on this, and Denmark cannot do it. We are in talks with Denmark. We really need this for our national security." The Greenland administration has made statements against these remarks, asserting that the island is "not for sale and will not be," while Denmark continues to emphasize its support for Greenland.
