After the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, Turkey continues to shake like a cradle. Last night, there were frightening tremors, first with a magnitude of 4.6 in Van and then 4.3 in Antalya. Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated that aftershocks of up to magnitude 4 are possible regarding the earthquake in Van, but he emphasized that "it is not a fault that will create a larger earthquake."
After the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, our country continues to shake like a cradle, while AFAD reported two alarming news last night.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Tuşba district of Van at 22:17. It was determined that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.11 kilometers.
"THERE IS NO NEGATIVE SITUATION"
AFAD also reported that there is no negative situation following the earthquake, and field scanning activities are ongoing. In a statement made by AFAD, it was stated, "As of now, there is no negative situation following the 4.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Tuşba district at 22:17. Field scanning activities are continuing. We extend our best wishes to the affected citizens."
OKAN TÜYSÜZ: I DO NOT EXPECT A LARGER EARTHQUAKE
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated in an interview with NTV that there is a compression throughout the region and that the tremor occurred in an area compressed by the 2011 Van and 2023 earthquakes. Tüysüz noted that the earthquake was likely caused by a "compressional fault."
Tüysüz mentioned that aftershocks of up to 4 in magnitude could occur, saying, "This is not a fault that will create a larger earthquake. There is no fault in this region (to the north) that will create a very large earthquake. I do not expect a larger earthquake. Since it is a shallow earthquake, it can be felt strongly over a wide area."
ANTALYA SHOOK WITH 4.3
At 03:31, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Konyaaltı district of Antalya. According to the data from the AFAD Earthquake Department, the depth of the earthquake was measured at 20.75 kilometers.
