The United Nations Development Program's Special Representative Jaco Cilliers stated in a statement regarding the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, "According to the reconstruction cost estimates made by the United Nations, the European Union, and the World Bank, at least 70 billion dollars will be needed for the region to become livable again."
After the ceasefire agreement came into effect in the Gaza Strip, the reconstruction of the region has taken center stage.
Jaco Cilliers, the Special Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), stated at a press conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, that more than 80% of all buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged, and at least 55 million tons of debris need to be cleared.
92% OF BUILDINGS ARE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED
Special Representative Cilliers reported that the proportion of destroyed or damaged buildings in the city of Gaza is 92%. He mentioned that debris clearing operations have begun in some areas, but added that the work has been seriously hampered due to unexploded ordnance.
"70 BILLION DOLLARS NEEDED"
In a statement regarding the cost of rebuilding the Gaza Strip, UNDP Special Representative Jaco Cilliers said, "According to the reconstruction cost estimates made by the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and the World Bank, at least 70 billion dollars will be needed for the region to become livable again." Cilliers also noted that they have received promising early signals regarding contributions to the 70 billion dollar budget from some Arab and European countries, as well as the United States.
