United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is "extremely concerned" about the renewed mutual attacks between the United States and Iran. Guterres, who noted he is also concerned about reports of civilian casualties in Iran, called for an immediate halt to military actions.
Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, made statements regarding the latest developments between the US and Iran during his daily press briefing.
Dujarric stated that Guterres is "extremely concerned" about the renewed mutual attacks between the US and Iran, adding that reports of civilian casualties in Iran have also deeply worried the Secretary-General.
CONDEMNED ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS
Dujarric, who conveyed that Guterres condemned all attacks against civilians, reminded the parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law.
Dujarric emphasized that the parties must comply with the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
"WILL HAVE DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES"
Guterres reiterated his call for the immediate cessation of military actions and the avoidance of actions and rhetoric that could further escalate tensions.
Dujarric warned that further escalation of tensions could have "devastating consequences" for civilians as well as for the region and beyond. The UN Secretary-General also urgently called on the US and Iran to return to diplomacy.
CRITICAL ROUTES IN THE REGION ALSO AFFECTED
The UN Spokesperson drew attention to the fact that countries in the region, as well as airspace and critical maritime routes, continue to be severely affected by the ongoing tensions.
Guterres emphasized that a lasting solution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.
