In Cinque Terre, a favorite among tourists for its magnificent landscapes, rules rather than nature are now making headlines. Visitors walking along Italy's famous hiking trails in flip-flops or inappropriate footwear may face fines that can exceed 130,000 TL. The regional administration has reminded tourists of the rules as the summer season begins.

Flip-flops, the quintessential summer footwear, are costing tourists dearly in one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations. In Cinque Terre National Park, which welcomes millions of visitors each year, fines of thousands of euros are being imposed on those entering hiking trails with inappropriate footwear.

Cinque Terre, famous for its colorful coastal villages in northwestern Italy, is known not only for its postcard-perfect scenery but also for its challenging hiking routes set on steep slopes. However, following an increase in accidents on the trails, authorities have introduced unusual rules for visitors.

FLIP-FLOPS BANNED

According to regulations enforced by the park administration, it is prohibited to walk on hiking trails wearing flip-flops, sandals, or other unsuitable footwear. Visitors found violating the rule during inspections can face fines of up to 2,500 euros. This amount is equivalent to approximately 130,000 Turkish lira at the current exchange rate.

Authorities warn tourists, noting that choosing the wrong footwear, especially on slippery and steep trails, can lead to serious injuries.

ONE-WAY RULE ALSO IN PLACE

The strict controls in Cinque Terre are not limited to footwear. To reduce overcrowding, the local administration has also implemented a one-way system on certain hiking routes.

On the Monterosso-Vernazza line, which sees heavy traffic especially during spring and summer, visitors are only allowed to proceed in one direction during specific hours. This aims to prevent both crowding and potential accidents.

ENTRY CARD REQUIRED FOR THE REGION

Those wishing to hike in the national park, which attracts tourists from around the world, must also purchase a "Cinque Terre Card." Sold at daily rates, the card is mandatory for using the trails and accessing various services.

Authorities have announced that with the start of the summer season, the rules are being reminded again and inspections have been increased. Therefore, tourists planning to visit Cinque Terre are advised to pack suitable hiking shoes rather than flip-flops in their suitcases.
