U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the federal government is likely to shut down. Trump said, "During a shutdown, we can do irreversible things that are bad for them and cannot be undone, such as laying off a large number of people and cutting the programs they love."
U.S. President Donald Trump answered questions from reporters at a press conference held at the White House.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS SHUTTING DOWN
Trump, who stated that the federal government is likely to shut down, claimed that Democrats want to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants. He noted that this attracts people from all over the world who want to receive free healthcare in the country, saying, "No country can afford this. Therefore, we cannot allow them to charge very high fees for healthcare for those who are not even citizens. Most of the time, these people come from prisons, jails, and mental hospitals. We cannot allow this to happen. That’s why we are fighting a big battle."
"WE CAN LAY OFF A LOT OF PEOPLE"
Claiming that Democrats want a shutdown, Trump said, "We do not want a shutdown because we are experiencing the greatest period ever. During a shutdown, we can lay off a lot of people, which would be irreversible, bad for them, and things that cannot be undone, like cutting the programs they love. So they are taking a risk with the shutdown." Trump also mentioned that they could cut social assistance due to the shutdown, stating that he would not want to do that, but they also do not want fraud, waste, and abuse.
THREW THE BALL TO THE DEMOCRATS
In response to a question about whether the shutdown is inevitable and how the talks with the Democrats are going, Trump said, "Nothing is inevitable, but I can say that it is likely to happen because they want to provide healthcare to illegal immigrants, which will ruin healthcare for everyone else in our country. I have not seen them give even a little bit when I said, 'We cannot do this.'
WHAT DOES THE SHUTDOWN OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MEAN?
In the U.S., as Democrats and Republicans have yet to reach an agreement on the budget bill just hours before the new fiscal year begins, the risk of a federal government shutdown at midnight tonight has increased.
According to the country’s laws, if Congress cannot approve the budget for the entire fiscal year, which starts on October 1 and ends on September 30, on time, the period until this happens must be covered by temporary budgets.
During periods when the budget is not approved, the federal government loses its spending authority and has to suspend all activities except for essential services.
During this process, public employees working in non-essential services are placed on mandatory leave, while public employees such as the U.S. military, intelligence agencies, doctors and nurses working in public hospitals, airport security personnel, and prison guards continue their duties.
These employees, categorized as "essential personnel," generally do not receive their salaries during shutdown periods until Congress passes a new budget.
