A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara yesterday at 12:49 PM, felt primarily in Istanbul, as well as in Tekirdağ, Yalova, Bursa, Sakarya, and Balıkesir. Following this earthquake, more than 260 aftershocks occurred, the largest of which was 5.9.

NEW STATEMENT FROM AFAD

A new statement regarding the earthquakes has been released by AFAD. Stating that 291 aftershocks have been experienced, AFAD also answered the question that Istanbul residents have been eagerly waiting for. AFAD noted that aftershocks will continue for a while longer.

THE EPICENTER OF THE EARTHQUAKE IS 24 KILOMETERS AWAY FROM SILIVRI

In the statement, AFAD included the following expressions: "On April 23, 2025, at 12:49 PM (TSI), a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. The earthquake was felt with low intensity in our provinces within a 300 km radius from the epicenter. The epicenter of the earthquake is approximately 24 km away from the nearest settlement, Silivri. During the earthquake, settlements on the southern shores of Istanbul were shaken with low accelerations corresponding to a magnitude of 5.

"291 AFTERSHOCKS RECORDED"

Thanks to the ongoing risk reduction efforts, the earthquake did not cause structural damage or loss of life. A total of 291 aftershocks have been recorded so far, with 283 of them being of magnitude 3.9 or lower, most of which are below 3. The number of aftershocks of magnitude 4 and above is 8.

"AFTERSHOCKS ARE EXPECTED TO END WITHIN A FEW WEEKS"

When examining the distribution of aftershocks over the last 28 hours at four-hour intervals, it is observed that there is a decreasing trend in the last 16 hours. It is expected that aftershocks will gradually decrease and end within the next few weeks. The energy released by the Mw 6.2 earthquake that occurred on April 23, 2025, is over 30 kTon TNT, which corresponds to approximately four times the energy of the Mw 5.8 earthquake that occurred in the same region on September 26, 2019."

YERLİKAYA REPORTED THE LATEST SITUATION IN ISTANBUL

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya made a statement regarding the latest situation in Istanbul. Stating that aftershocks have decreased, Yerlikaya said: "After the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Sea of Marmara yesterday, we informed our citizens together with our Ministers, and we continue to provide information. As you know, the 6.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in our provinces, especially in Istanbul, as well as in Tekirdağ, Yalova, Bursa, Sakarya, and Balıkesir.

"NO AFTERSHOCKS ABOVE 4 IN THE LAST 12 HOURS"

So far, a total of 8 aftershocks of magnitude 4 and above have been recorded, the largest of which was 5.9. According to the assessment made by our AFAD Earthquake Science Committee, 7 of these aftershocks were recorded in the first 4 hours after the earthquake. In the last 12 hours, no aftershocks above 4 have occurred.

"AFTERSHOCKS ARE TRENDING DOWNWARD"

Especially when evaluating the last 16 hours, it is clearly seen that aftershocks are trending downward. Our AFAD Earthquake Science Committee will also share the second press release with the public shortly. Dear members of the press, the TAMP (Turkey Disaster Response Plan) that we activated minutes after the earthquake is continuing its work meticulously with representatives from all disaster groups.

"16,793 CALLS RECEIVED"

As I mentioned in our press release today at noon: Field surveys and reports received by our 112 Emergency Call Center are still being evaluated. So far, 16,793 calls have been received at our 112 Emergency Call Center. Of these, 997 were requests for 'emergency assistance related to the earthquake.' This shows that there is a significant decrease in the incoming calls. Dear members of the press, to support the efforts in the Marmara Region, 650 personnel and 148 vehicles have been assigned from our 22 Provincial AFAD Directorates. Together with other public institutions and accredited NGOs, a total of 903 vehicles and 11,481 personnel are continuing their duties.

"THE NUMBER OF OUR CITIZENS IN EMERGENCY SHELTER AREAS HAS DECREASED"

Regarding shelter; 27 logistics depots and 54 mobile depots are active. 51,000 of our citizens who requested shelter in Istanbul were accommodated in our mosques; 50,000 citizens were also sheltered in schools, dormitories, and social facilities. In total, the shelter requests of 101,000 citizens have been met. Just like last night, today, if there are requests, we will continue to meet the shelter needs of our citizens. Dear members of the press, based on the information we received from the Gendarmerie and our Police at 6:00 PM, we see that the number of our citizens in both emergency shelter areas and parks has significantly decreased compared to yesterday.

Again, regarding 'Nutrition,' under the coordination of the Turkish Red Crescent; 36 catering tents and 99 catering vehicles from 41 municipalities and NGOs are operating with a total of 302 vehicles and 1,508 personnel and volunteers. Just like yesterday, catering will continue at 348 distribution points today.

Dear members of the press, our state is on the ground with all its institutions. All necessary measures have been taken for the peace and safety of our citizens, and potential risks are being evaluated meticulously. I once again extend my best wishes to our citizens living in Istanbul and the provinces where the earthquake was felt. May God protect our country and our nation from all kinds of disasters.
