A horrific lion attack in India's Gujarat state has horrified both locals and social media users. In the incident, which occurred in the morning, a shepherd tending his cattle was seriously injured after being attacked by a lioness. Footage captured on a mobile phone camera shows the bloodied man struggling to escape the predator's claws.
The incident took place in Garajiya village in Gujarat. According to information obtained, local resident Kalubhai Boghabhai Gamara became the target of a lioness that suddenly emerged while he was grazing his animals in the morning.
According to eyewitness accounts, the lioness ran toward the shepherd with great speed and knocked him to the ground. Then, the predator subdued the man with its powerful claws and began attacking his legs.
In the footage, which quickly spread on social media, Kalubhai is seen covered in blood trying to escape from under the lioness's claws. Moments when nearby citizens screamed and panicked were also captured on camera.
No one in the vicinity dared to approach the injured man because the lioness continued its aggressive behavior, occasionally baring its teeth.
Villagers who witnessed the incident began throwing stones at the lioness and shouting loudly to stop the attack. However, despite all interventions, the lioness continued its assault for a long time.
While locals experienced great fear, the predator eventually moved away into the surrounding forest area without any intervention.
After the lion left the area, first aid was administered to the severely injured Kalubhai at the scene. He was then taken by ambulance to a hospital in Palitana, where it was reported that he had serious injuries to various parts of his body and was undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, the Palitana Wildlife Conservation Unit also issued a written statement.
Officials suggested that, according to initial assessments, the villagers' shouting after noticing the lion may have caused the animal to panic. The statement noted that during the chaos, the lion injured one person while trying to escape.
However, it was reported that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat state is known as the only place in the world where Asiatic lions live in the wild.
According to 2025 data, approximately 891 Asiatic lions live in the region. Although the population has increased in recent years due to conservation efforts, similar attacks have become more frequent as human habitats and wildlife increasingly intermingle.
Experts highlight that the risk of encountering wild animals is rising, especially for citizens living in rural areas.
