Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki stated in an interview with Melis Yaşar on Haberler.com that the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul did not reduce the risk of a major earthquake in the Marmara region; rather, it may have accelerated the process slightly.
In the studio of Haberler.com, Japanese Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki, who was the guest of presenter Melis Yaşar, made important statements regarding the expected major earthquake in Marmara following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul. Moriwaki stated that the tremor did not release energy and could accelerate the anticipated major earthquake.
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred yesterday at 12:49 off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. Following the tremor, up to 266 aftershocks were recorded by 09:00 today, the largest of which was 5.9. Evaluating the latest situation in the broadcast of Haberler.com, Yoshinori Moriwaki said, "The earthquake that occurred has slightly accelerated the major Istanbul earthquake."
"WE EXPECT A 7.5 AND ABOVE EARTHQUAKE IN MARMARA"
Moriwaki indicated that a major earthquake is expected in the Marmara region. "We expect an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude and above in Marmara. Such earthquakes are already predicted within historical cycles," he said.
"THE OCCURRED EARTHQUAKE DID NOT REDUCE THE ENERGY OF THE MAJOR EARTHQUAKE"
Emphasizing that the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul did not reduce the energy of the anticipated major Istanbul earthquake, Moriwaki stated, "This earthquake did not release energy. On the contrary, it may have slightly accelerated the major Istanbul earthquake," he said.
"AFTERSHOCKS MAY CONTINUE FOR UP TO 2 MONTHS"
Moriwaki drew attention to the possibility of aftershocks following the earthquake: "Aftershocks may continue for 1.5-2 months. Caution should be exercised during this period." He also highlighted the importance of building safety by stating that a large number of people lost their lives on stairs during the earthquakes in Hatay and Maraş.
