Geology Engineer Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal made evaluations to Haberler.com following the 5.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Marmaris in Muğla. Pampal stated, "Destructive earthquakes of up to magnitude 9 can occur in the region, and larger ones will definitely come." Meanwhile, in the earthquake that was also felt in surrounding provinces, a 14-year-old girl lost her life due to a panic attack, and 69 people were injured.
After the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Marmaris, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal, who made evaluations to Haberler.com, stated that the region is located on active fault lines such as the Crete-Rhodes line, the Strabo Pliny trenches, and the Fethiye-Burdur transform fault. Pampal, who said that these faults could produce destructive earthquakes of up to magnitude 9, expressed, "There will definitely be larger earthquakes in this region, there is no doubt about it."
"DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKES OF UP TO MAGNITUDE 9 CAN OCCUR IN THE REGION"
Evaluating the earthquake, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal stated, "A 5.8 earthquake is not a very large earthquake. However, the region has the Crete-Rhodes line, and there are trenches known as the Strabo Pliny trenches that are very close to this area, as well as transform faults. The Fethiye-Burdur transform fault is active and effective at plate boundaries, tectonic lines. A major destructive earthquake occurred on the Burdur fault in Turkey. Many of the Aegean Islands are formed as a result of volcanic activity. The boundary between southern Africa and northern Anatolia is significant. It produces active, destructive earthquakes up to magnitude 9. It is not surprising to have destructive earthquakes in the region," he said.
"THERE IS NO DOUBT, LARGER EARTHQUAKES ARE COMING"
In response to the question of whether larger earthquakes could occur in the region, Pampal said, "We can call these precursors, but it may not be very accurate to say that it will bring a larger one. A larger one is already going to happen, it exists. This tells us that this place is active; it says that I have produced earthquakes of 8-8.5 in the recent past. Larger ones are coming. There is no doubt about it. This is because it is the location of a few tectonic plates in the world, namely we call it the Anatolian plate. Inside the Aegean, there are the Cyprus and Helen arcs that pass south of Cyprus, south of Rhodes."
