Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sharply criticized US President Donald Trump's agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on diesel fuel supplies. Describing the easing of sanctions on Russia as a clear sign of weakness, Zelenskyy argued that Moscow would use oil revenues to continue the war. The Ukrainian leader called on the Trump administration to reach a reciprocal agreement that would stop Russia's energy attacks.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reacted sharply to the diesel fuel agreement Trump reached with Putin. The Ukrainian leader warned that reducing economic pressure on Russia would prolong the war.
REACTION TO TRUMP AND PUTIN'S DIESEL DEAL
US President Donald Trump's diesel fuel agreement, announced after his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, drew Ukraine's reaction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the approach that allows Russia to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets. Noting that the conversation between Trump and Putin produced a different result, Zelenskyy argued that easing sanctions imposed on Russia would embolden the Moscow administration. Zelenskyy opposed the easing of economic sanctions without concrete steps toward ending the war.
"A CLEAR SIGN OF WEAKNESS"
Zelenskyy claimed that Russia relies on agreements made behind closed doors to reduce international pressure. Reminding that Europe recently decided to lift sanctions on Russian oligarchs, the Ukrainian leader noted that Russian attacks did not decrease during this process. Zelenskyy said, "Since that date, Russian attacks and the suffering people endure have only increased."
In his assessment of the consequences of lifting sanctions, he used the following statements: "Without an agreement stipulating an open and lasting de-escalation with Russia, the easing of sanctions against Russia is a clear sign of weakness. This benefits Russia; it allows it to kill more people, prolong the war longer, show even less respect for America, and inflict greater losses and damage on the world."
"RUSSIA WILL PAY FOR DIESEL FUEL WITH MORE TERROR AND BETRAYAL"
Zelenskyy argued that revenue Russia would earn from selling petroleum products would contribute to the continuation of the war. Criticizing the US approach toward Moscow, the Ukrainian leader used the following words in the harshest part of his statement: "The gifts given to Putin will not bring peace, nor will they provide any benefit to the civilized world. Russia will pay for diesel fuel with more terror and betrayal. Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products means investing in a war that must be ended, whereas this war should not be prolonged. What is needed is a genuine de-escalation with Russia on the basis of reciprocity."
