7.6-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN PANAMA
A severe earthquake occurred in southern parts of Panama. The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the earthquake's magnitude as 8.0, then updated it to 7.6.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which was reported to have occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers, was stated to be near the rural settlement of La Pitaloza in a sparsely populated area.
BUILDINGS COLLAPSED
While damage assessment work and situation evaluations continue in the region, initial statements did not share any information regarding loss of life, injuries, or material damage. Many buildings were seen to have collapsed.
It was reported that citizens in areas where the earthquake was felt evacuated their homes and workplaces and went out into the streets. It was stated that the tremors were felt in the capital Panama City as well as in the neighboring country of Costa Rica.
TSUNAMI WARNING
Following the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for the next 3 hours for some parts of the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico.
The warning also stated that there is a tsunami risk for the US island state of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.
