Iran has discovered 10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves in the Pazen Gas Field located in the south. While Russia is known to have the largest proven natural gas reserves in the world, with 47 trillion cubic meters, it has been stated that this recent discovery could challenge Moscow's throne.
Iran announced that it has discovered 10 trillion cubic feet (283 billion cubic meters) of natural gas reserves in the south of the country.
EXCITING NATURAL GAS RESERVE DISCOVERY IN IRAN
According to Iranian state television, Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad stated that a large gas reserve has been discovered in the Pazen Gas Field, located in the south of Fars province. Paknejad reported that the reserve was identified as a result of exploration activities for oil and gas in the south of the country, saying, "The exploration activities conducted in the area extending from the Pazen field in southern Fars province to the north of Bushehr led to this significant discovery."
A TOTAL OF 10 TRILLION CUBIC FEET
Paknejad stated, "There are 10 trillion cubic feet (283 billion 168 million cubic meters) of gas in this field, and if we consider a recovery rate of 70%, we can reach at least 7 trillion cubic meters."
RUSSIA AT THE TOP OF NATURAL GAS RESERVES
The Iranian Minister noted that the new reserves could help resolve Iran's energy crisis in the coming years.
According to the 2021 report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Russia has the largest proven natural gas reserves in the world at 47 trillion cubic meters, while Iran ranks second with 34 trillion cubic meters.
Holding 17% of the world's proven gas reserves, Iran needs investments to develop its large gas fields, but U.S. unilateral sanctions prevent Western companies from making any commercial agreements with this country.
After the U.S. reimposed sanctions on Iran's oil industry and exports in 2018, the French energy company Total withdrew from Iran. On the other hand, Iran, which is one of the countries with the largest natural gas and oil reserves in the world, has faced energy shortages in recent months due to the heavy pressure of economic sanctions, insufficient infrastructure investments, and rapidly increasing energy demand.
