UEFA is preparing for a major change regarding the broadcasting rights of the Champions League. Under the new system, the digital streaming giant Netflix will be able to bid for the global broadcasting rights of one match each match week.
CAN BE SOLD AS SINGLE MATCH RIGHTS
According to The Times, UEFA plans to sell broadcasting rights not only on a country basis but also as single match rights globally in the new tender process covering the period from 2027 to 2033. This model will allow digital platforms like Netflix and Amazon to enter football broadcasting on a global scale.
GOAL: 5 BILLION EUROS IN REVENUE
It is reported that UEFA aims to increase its annual revenue to over 5 billion euros with this move. If Netflix steps into football, a significant competition among digital platforms is expected to begin. This step could also be a historic turning point for Netflix as it enters live sports broadcasting for the first time.
A NEW VIEWER PROFILE MAY EMERGE IN TURKEY
Netflix's inclusion in the Champions League broadcasts may also change football viewing habits in Turkey. The platform, which has approximately 2 million subscribers, starting to offer football content could create a new, young, and digitally-focused audience. However, it was emphasized that the new model will not cover all matches, but only one match per week.
