In an operation carried out by gendarmerie teams in Tunceli, 200 kilograms of wild garlic were seized, and a suspect was fined 557,000 lira.
In the rural area of Anıl Village in the Çemişgezek district of Tunceli, gendarmerie teams were mobilized following a report that the identity of a person or persons collecting the protected Mountain Garlic was unknown and that they had left the area by vehicle.
5 SACKS SEIZED, 557 THOUSAND FINE IMPOSED
Teams from the Tunceli Provincial Gendarmerie Command closed all routes in the area and carried out a comprehensive surveillance and shock road control operation. As a result of the operation, a suspicious vehicle was caught, and approximately 200 kilograms of Mountain Garlic were seized in 5 sacks found in the vehicle. The person in the vehicle was apprehended and fined 557 thousand TL for the crime of 'Harming the natural balance.'
IT IS AMONG ENDANGERED SPECIES
The Mountain Garlic, unique to Tunceli, is among the endemic species threatened due to being sold for commercial purposes or being collected from nature carelessly and out of season. In a statement from the Tunceli Provincial Gendarmerie Command, it was emphasized that efforts are being made with determination and resolve in cooperation with all institutions to prevent crimes against the environment and biological diversity with the understanding that "Protecting nature is breathing for the future."
