U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claimed that President Donald Trump's administration is "preparing the ground for some kind of military operation" against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Responding to a question about the Trump administration's increase in military activity in the Caribbean region under the pretext of combating drugs, Clinton said, "I think they are laying the groundwork for some kind of military operation against Maduro."
Clinton stated that it is unknown whether the vessels that the U.S. has attacked in the region are "fishing boats or drug boats," saying, "They (the Trump administration) don't know either; my assessment is in that direction because if they had an idea, they would at least share that information."

Clinton noted that the U.S. Department of Defense has provided "no information" regarding the details of the attacks on these vessels, describing this situation as a "serious issue that the majority in the U.S. Congress is determined to ignore."
Hillary Clinton stated, "According to what I've read, the largest of the vessels carries 12 passengers. You have a large naval force in the region. You can also call the Coast Guard to stop the boat and find out what is inside. So, that is what you need to do."

Clinton argued that the U.S.'s real intention is not to prevent drugs but to "confront" the Maduro administration and to "force Maduro to give up power." Warning that if Maduro is overthrown through external intervention, Venezuela could resemble post-Qaddafi Libya, Clinton continued: "(In Venezuela) there are military forces, militia forces, and drug cartels. So if we are going to have some kind of foreign policy objective, if we want to get rid of Maduro, what comes next and who will take responsibility for that? Will there be a giant Somalia on the South American coasts?"
Clinton emphasized that drugs are transported from China to Mexico, not from Venezuela, stating, "So, I know there is a bigger target in mind, and I think it hasn't been thought about enough."
