2 BILLION LIRA WORTH OF CANNABIS DESTROYED
The Narcotic Crimes Department of the Diyarbakır Provincial Police and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office conducted an operation supported by boats, helicopters, and drones in the Hevsel Gardens, located along the Tigris River, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The operation, which began with the sunrise, involved the Diyarbakır police, who carried out landings with underwater police from the Elazığ Provincial Police, as well as aerial support from police helicopters and drones throughout the search. A total of approximately 30,000 cannabis plants, suitable for the production of 5,300 kilograms of marijuana, worth around 2 billion TL, were uprooted and destroyed from 31 different areas.
THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE INACCESSIBILITY FOR VEHICLES
It was determined that drug traffickers, who planned to take advantage of the inability to access the Hevsel Gardens due to the terrain, set up tents to create living spaces in order to protect and maintain illegal cannabis cultivation areas, and used water pumps from the Tigris River for irrigation.
It was observed that citizens who still engage in legal agriculture using traditional methods in the region were quite pleased with the operation. It was reported that operations against drug traffickers, who aim to poison the youth and future generations, will continue with determination and resolve, increasing in frequency and intensity under all circumstances.
