NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte opposed the views that Europe can ensure its own security without the US. Speaking in the European Parliament, Rutte stated that a defense concept without the US is unrealistic and said, "If someone thinks that the EU or Europe can defend itself without the US, they should keep dreaming."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte strongly opposed discussions suggesting that Europe could ensure its own security without the United States. Speaking in the European Parliament, Rutte emphasized that the transatlantic alliance is indispensable and stated that a defense scenario without the U.S. is unrealistic.

"THEY CAN CONTINUE TO DREAM"

In remarks made at the joint meeting of the European Parliament's Security and Defense Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee, Rutte stated:

"If someone here thinks that the EU or Europe as a whole can defend itself without the U.S., they can continue to dream. We cannot do this. We need each other."

Rutte's comments drew attention during a period when U.S. President Donald Trump's criticisms of NATO have resurfaced.

"YOU WILL LOSE THIS RACE"

Rutte emphasized that Europe's unilateral actions would incur serious costs and highlighted defense spending. The NATO Secretary General expressed that even raising European countries' defense spending to 5% of their gross domestic product would not be sufficient, stating that this figure needs to reach around 10%.

Rutte warned that Europe's attempt to establish an independent defense structure carries serious risks, stating, "You will lose this race."

NUCLEAR WARNING: "YOU WILL LOSE THE U.S. UMBRELLA"

In his speech, Rutte also addressed the issue of nuclear deterrence, stating that Europe may have to build its own nuclear capacity, which would cost billions of euros.

Rutte said, "In such a scenario, you will also lose the U.S. nuclear umbrella, which is the ultimate guarantee of our freedom. So, good luck."

"THE U.S. ALSO NEEDS NATO"

Rutte emphasized that not only Europe but also the U.S. needs NATO. The NATO Secretary General stated that the weakening of the transatlantic bond would increase security risks for both sides and called for the strengthening of the alliance.
