The first official step was taken following the decree issued by Syrian President Shara regarding the Kurds. The Syrian Ministry of Education published an official decision regarding the teaching of Kurdish as an elective subject in state schools.

After Syrian President Ahmed Shara issued a presidential decree regarding Syrian Kurds last week, a noteworthy step was taken. The Syrian Ministry of Education published an official decree that foresees the teaching of Kurdish as an elective subject in state schools.

KURDISH WILL BE TAUGHT AS AN ELECTIVE SUBJECT IN SYRIA

According to the decision emphasizing that the teaching of Kurdish protects the cultural and linguistic rights in the Syrian Constitution and that Kurds are part of Syria's national identity, Kurdish will be taught in state schools as an elective in regions where the Kurdish population is significantly high. The Kurdish course will be taught on an optional (elective) basis. The grades students receive from the course will not affect the overall success average. Classes will be conducted within the framework of existing educational plans, and new curricula will be prepared during this process.

A CURRICULUM WILL BE DEVELOPED WITHIN 1 YEAR

The National Education Curriculum Development Center, affiliated with the Ministry, will be responsible for preparing the Kurdish education curriculum. While the goal is to complete the curriculum within a year at the latest, it is required to be compatible with the national education framework.

Teachers who will teach Kurdish will need to graduate from courses organized by the ministry. Those who do not meet this requirement will be asked to have a certificate of proficiency in Kurdish and to pass written and oral proficiency exams.
