It was reported that 14 people lost their lives in the flood caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa, which has been effective since last night in Taiwan. According to the news from the Taiwan agency CNA, the flood inundated residential areas due to the overflow of Matai'an Set Lake in Gangfu town, Hualien County, located in the eastern part of the island, as a result of heavy rainfall.

MOST OF THE VICTIMS WERE ELDERLY PEOPLE WHO COULD NOT EVACUATE THEIR HOMES

Local disaster units reported that 14 people lost their lives in the flood, 18 were injured, and 30 were missing. It was noted that most of the deceased were elderly people who could not evacuate their homes in time. The water level in residential areas rose to the first floors of houses due to the flood, while streets were covered in mud and sludge. The town's train station became unusable due to the flood, and the road bridge over Matai'an River was destroyed. Disaster rescue teams evacuated more than 3,000 people living in Gangfu, Fenglin, and Wanrong towns.

HONG KONG AND GUANGDONG ON ALERT

As Super Typhoon Ragasa approached the southern coast of China, coming within 100 kilometers during the night, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Guangdong province went on the highest alert level.

The Hong Kong Observatory reported that the typhoon is expected to pass near the city between 06:00 and 09:00 local time, raising the storm warning to the highest level of 10.

SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES CLOSED IN 10 CITIES

Guangdong province on the Chinese mainland also declared a level 1 alarm, the highest level in the 4-tier typhoon warning system. All primary schools, as well as junior and senior high schools in the city, will be closed today and tomorrow, while approximately 600 flight cancellations occurred, and some train services were halted. The China Meteorological Center reported that the super typhoon would be effective in the province from this afternoon, with strong winds, rain, and high waves expected to continue until tomorrow evening.

While more than 371,000 people living in flood-prone areas in the province were evacuated, helicopters, drones, 23 ships, and 38,000 disaster rescue personnel are on standby for intervention.

SUPER TYPHOON RAGASA

The first "super typhoon" of the year, Ragasa, formed in the Pacific Ocean, prompted storm and emergency warnings along its path, which includes the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China. Ragasa, which emerged as a tropical storm in the Western Pacific on September 16, intensified into a super typhoon as it approached the northeastern coast of the Philippines. Carrying winds that reached speeds of 260 kilometers per hour, Ragasa is expected to first affect northern Philippines and Taiwan, then reach the southern coast of China, and subsequently head westward towards northern Vietnam.
