Turgut Özal Anatolian High School, which provides co-education in Düzce, has prepared a set of school rules under the title "Points Our Students Should Pay Attention To" consisting of 18 items for students who wish to enroll in the new academic year.

THE 18-ITEM RULES LIST HAS SPARKED DEBATE

In addition to the rules set by the Ministry of National Education, the 18-item list also includes rules that may lead to discrimination between male and female students.

"GIRLS AND BOYS WILL NOT SIT TOGETHER"

According to the list, a girl cannot sit next to the driver on the bus, and if there is no space in the back seat, she will stand if necessary, even if the front seat is empty. In the canteen line, girls will not be allowed to stand in the same line as boys.

"BEHAVIOR IN RELATIONSHIPS WILL BE LEVEL-HEADED"

Among the items, it is stated that "In girl-boy relationships, behavior will be level-headed. We do not want to encounter any situation that may lead to misunderstandings. No justification such as my cousin, my best friend, my friend of eight years, etc., will be accepted in such a situation."

"STUDENTS ARE PROHIBITED FROM WEARING TIGHTS"

Furthermore, the text also includes rules regarding physical education class attire, stating that students will not be allowed to wear tights. The school rules also included regulations on how students should behave in the canteen. Accordingly, attention should be paid to the line order of boys and girls in the canteen, and students are requested not to "source" (misbehave), and if someone does, this situation should be reported to the supervising teachers or school administration. In another item, students are asked to pay attention to "childish behaviors or the level of joking that remains from middle school."

THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE HAS TAKEN ACTION

A written statement was made by the Düzce Governor's Office regarding the 18-item list that has been reflected in the public. The statement included the following: "It has been understood that the parents were informed by a written text regarding the rules that our students are required to follow in the 2025-2026 academic year by the School Administration of Turgut Özal Anatolian High School in our city. It is understood that the rules specified in the relevant text aim to ensure that our students respect each other and the school environment, prevent possible misunderstandings, and prevent negative situations that may arise among students, thus providing a safe and healthy educational environment. However, it has been observed that some expressions in the text exceed their purpose and lead to misunderstandings, debates, and discomfort in society."

"IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE"

An investigation and inquiry have been initiated regarding the controversial statements in the text. It is not acceptable in any way to allow practices that would negatively affect our students. The fundamental approach of our institutions is to strive to provide education in an environment where our students feel safe, peaceful, and healthy."
