41 suspects in corruption operation at Ege University at the courthouse

In Izmir, 41 suspects who were detained for allegedly causing 3.1 billion TL in public damage by committing irregularities in public tenders at the Ege University Revolving Fund Management Directorate and procurement units were referred to the courthouse. The former chief physician and general secretary were also involved in the operation.

41 suspects who were detained for alleged irregularities in public tenders and direct procurement processes at Ege University (EU) Revolving Fund Management Directorate and purchasing units in Izmir, for favoring certain companies and causing public loss, have been referred to the courthouse.

The Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into allegations that public officials working at the university's Revolving Fund Management Directorate and purchasing units, along with various company representatives, acted in an organized manner and committed irregularities in public tenders and direct procurement processes. In this context, detention orders were issued for 47 suspects on grounds of favoring certain companies and causing public loss. Teams carried out simultaneous operations in 6 provinces centered in Izmir on June 9.

FORMER CHIEF PHYSICIAN ALSO DETAINED

In the operation, 47 suspects, including former EU Hospital Chief Physician Devrim B. and former Ege University Hospital General Secretary Muhterem A., were detained. It was also reported that 2 unlicensed pistols were seized during the operation, and numerous digital materials were confiscated for examination.

'3.1 BILLION TL PUBLIC LOSS' ALLEGATION

It was alleged that the suspects committed irregularities in tenders and direct procurement purchases at the EU Revolving Fund Management Directorate, with institutional managers and some company representatives acting in an organized manner and causing public loss. Additionally, the investigation was stated to be conducted following allegations that competition conditions were eliminated in tender processes and public resources were used to benefit certain individuals and companies. It was stated that, as also identified in Court of Accounts reports, reviews and evaluations determined that approximately 3 billion 100 million Turkish liras of public loss occurred due to procurement transactions carried out by the EU Revolving Fund Management Directorate. Six of the suspects were released after police procedures. The remaining 41 suspects were referred to the courthouse this morning.
