A 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for 12 countries with coastlines along the Caribbean Sea, including Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica.
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor was recorded at 6:23 PM local time, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
It was reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was 209 kilometers southwest of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands.
TSUNAMI WARNING FOR MANY COUNTRIES
In a statement from the International Tsunami Information Center, a tsunami warning was issued, stating, "Due to this earthquake, dangerous tsunami waves may occur within the next 3 hours in Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, the Bahamas, Haiti, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica."
NO RISK FOR THE U.S.
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center announced that there is no tsunami risk for the U.S. mainland, but tsunami waves may be observed in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
