Seventy-two-year-old Rafet Karakabak, who lives in Ellibaş Village, connected to Kozcağız Town in Bartın and is retired from a mining job, saw in a dream that he had died. After his dream, Karakabak went to the village cemetery, identified an empty spot next to his parents' graves, and began to dig his own grave.
HE PREPARED HIS GRAVE ACCORDING TO HIS MEASUREMENTS
Taking his own measurements, Karakabak started to dig a grave that is 60 centimeters wide, 1 meter 90 centimeters long, and 1 meter 20 centimeters deep. He made the sides and the top cover out of concrete, completing his grave after working for hours over two days. Explaining that he dug his grave after the dream he had, Rafet Karakabak said, "I saw in my dream that I had died. When I woke up in the morning, I went to my parents' graves in the village cemetery. I decided to dig my grave in the empty area in front of my parents' graves. I am still under the influence of the dream I had. I wanted to pass the time and not be a burden to anyone after I die. I took my own measurements and prepared a grave with concrete sides and top covers. I come to my grave every Friday. I pray for my parents and other relatives who are here."
HE ENTERED THE GRAVE AND SCARED HIS FRIEND
Karakabak, who recounted that he experienced funny incidents while digging his grave, said, "When people came to the grave of someone buried above, they asked me what I was doing when they saw me digging. I told them I was digging my grave. When they didn't believe me, I would say, 'I miss my mother and father very much; I am going to them.' I called a friend on the phone to help me place the concrete covers on my grave. My friend didn't believe that I was digging my grave. He thought I was joking, and when I insisted, he came to the cemetery out of curiosity. I knew he would be curious, so I played a joke on him. I lay in my grave and waited for him. When he arrived at the cemetery and couldn't find me, he started to get scared. When he saw the open grave and approached, he saw me lying in the grave. He got very scared when he saw me and pulled me out of the grave," he said.
THOSE WHO HEAR LAUGH AT HIM
Karakabak also noted that those who see or hear about his grave laugh at him, saying, "Those who see or hear that I dug my grave are making fun of me, but I don't care about them. They say to me, 'Can you dig a grave before you die? Don't you have anyone? Will your grave be left without anyone, do you have no children?' but I am not bothered by what they say. Because I didn't think I could be left without anyone while digging my grave. My relatives and children will take care of it," he stated.
ENTERING THE GRAVE, HE SAID "DON'T FORGET ME"
Rafet Karakabak, who often enters the grave he dug, sent a message to his loved ones and friends from inside the grave. Karakabak said, "Oh my loved ones, my friends, I am here. Don't forget me," requesting that his grave be visited and prayers be made.
